What a gravel driveway costs around Canandaigua
New driveways by the foot, regrades by the job, and the parts — culverts, base, permits — that surprise people.
Gravel driveways are priced mostly by length, width, and how much base they need. A regrade of a sound driveway is one of the most affordable things we do; building a new one over soft ground with a culvert and a highway permit is a real project. Here's what to expect in 2026 across Ontario County and the Finger Lakes.

What moves the number
- Base depthA driveway over well-drained gravel might need 4 inches of base. Over Farmington or Victor clay it needs 6 to 8 over fabric or it heaves. Base is most of the cost of a new drive.
- SlopeHillside drives need heavier surface stone, water bars or cross-drains, and ditching. Add 15 to 30 percent over a flat drive of the same length.
- DrainageCulverts at the road, culverts along the drive, and ditching are separate line items and often the difference between a drive that lasts and one that washes.
- Surface stoneCrusher run is cheapest; #1 and #2 washed limestone costs more per ton but looks and performs better. Decorative stone is a premium.
- PermitsNew entrances onto town, county, or state roads need a highway work permit. The fee is small; the required culvert and apron may not be.
